The Northern Spain & Portugal tour is a truly unique adventure featuring many “off the beaten path” locations and exclusive high end/centrally located accommodations. This is the longest tour offered by Worlds of Spain and has been seamlessly organized to ensure it is remembered as one of the best adventures of your life. I am especially proud of this tour and can’t wait to share it with you!

Day 1: USA to Madrid

An exciting adventure awaits as you leave the familiar behind and arrive in the captivating city of Madrid. 

Day 2: Madrid

After arriving, settle into your hotel and prepare for an unforgettable journey. At 7 p.m., gather with your fellow travelers and our Tour Director for a welcome dinner that sets the tone for the incredible experiences ahead. 

Day 3: Madrid to Burgos

As we venture toward North toward Burgos, we’ll pause at Bodegas Portia - A winery in the heart of Ribera del Duero designed by the prestigious architectural studio Foster & Partners. This winery promises a delightful introduction to Spanish wines and awe-inspiring moments. After indulging in a sumptuous lunch, we’ll proceed to Burgos where you’ll have time to explore the city and tour its gorgeous Gothic Cathedral. 

Day 4: Burgos to San Sebastian

Departing Burgos, your next destination is the Basque gem of San Sebastian. Along the way, we’ll stop in Haros, the capital of La Rioja (the other wine region of Spain). Here you will have the opportunity to visit one of its many wineries and embrace the culture of the region. If you are a wine lover, you will not want to miss this. After lunch we will continue to San Sebastian – which is not only a picturesque city adorned with a bayfront promenade & charming architecture, but also holds the title of “The Food Capital of the World”.

Day 5: San Sebastian

Prepare your tastebuds to relish a day of freedom in San Sebastian, a paradise for food enthusiasts. Embark on a gastronomic journey discovering Michelin-starred restaurants and culinary masterpieces that rival the finest around the globe. Mugaritz, for example, is considered one of the top 5 restaurants in the World. You are sure to have a full day feasting on the food and beautiful sights of this city. 

Day 6: San Sebastian to Santander

Our journey continues to Bilbao -the capital of the Basque region.  Here we’ll take a walking tour of the city and have time to visit the Guggenheim Museum, a masterpiece crafted by Frank Gehry. Then, after lunch, we’ll venture to Santander where you’ll have time to explore this beautiful coastal city before dinner (included).  Additionally, you may also wish to continue the evening by trying your luck at the majestic Grand Casino (please bring appropriate attire for the Casino if you would like to enter).

Day 7: Santander

After breakfast (included) we’ll embark on a guided exploration of Santader’s treasures followed by leisure time to bask by the beach (weather permitting) or discover the city’s hidden gems on your own.  

Day 8: Santander to Avilés

After breakfast (included) we’ll make our way to one of the most enchanting towns in Spain:  Santillana del Mar where history and hidden courtyards await. Then, (if I can convince you leave this enchanting village) we’ll journey onward to the spiritual oasis of Covadonga -a magical place known as the cradle of Spain commemorating the Battle of Covadonga in 718. As the day turns into evening we’ll arrive in Aviles where a former 18th century palace awaits as your 5-Star hotel accommodation. After checking in you’ll have free time to explore the architecture, shopping, and dining options nearby.

Day 9: Avilés to Santiago

Today we’ll embark on a scenic drive to Cudillero, a charming coastal fishing village. It’s cliffside colorful homes, city square and winding hidden walkways promise endless photo opportunities. After exploring this town, we’ll continue the journey to Santiago de Compstela - of the most popular pilgrim destinations in the world since the Middle Ages.  

Day 10: Santiago to Porto

On the way to Porto, we will depart towards Combarro, a lovely village of tiled roofs and hidden walkways.  Have your cameras ready, as you will have time to explore the town and enjoy the view. 

After checking into our hotel in Porto,  we will walk briefly around the city before boarding a cruise of the six bridges (weather permitting) where you will have a chance to capture the best views, and pictures, of this gorgeous city.

Day 11: Porto

This morning we’ll explore Porto with a guided tour after breakfast. You’ll want your camera and comfortable shoes for this day out and about one of the world’s most beautiful and interesting cities.

Day 12: Porto to Lisbon

On our way to Lisbon we’ll stop at the medieval marvel of Obidos. Here we’ll savor a charming lunch amid the town’s fortified and well-preserved Portuguese medieval architecture. Once in Lisbon, you’ll enjoy free time before a Farewell Dinner commemorating our incredible adventure. 

Day 13: Return to USA

Bid farewell to the captivating lands of Northern Spain and Portugal as you embark on the journey home ready to share your memories of this remarkable trip. 

Where Will I Stay?

For this tour, Worlds of Spain offers multiple night stays in 5 & 4 * hotels, select/boutique, centrally located for tourist attractions and shopping. To offer the best possible price to our participants, rooms are based on double occupancy. Individual rooms are available, but at an additional cost of $1,500 (due to the hotels used in this particular tour).
